The conceptual design was prepared for a competition launched on the initiative of the Norman Foster Foundation. The aim of the competition was to propose a solution, easy-to-implement solutions, for the renovation of partially damaged or destroyed large-panel residential buildings in the Saltivka district of Kharkiv. In addition, the solutions were also to respond to the problem of insufficient saturation of the area with services. Another important issue was to propose universal solutions offering shelter for the civilian population within the entire complex.
The concept involves wrapping the buildings with built-in, glazed loggias with opening, sliding sections above the balustrade, with simultaneous interference with the existing masses in the form of bay windows protruding from the face, made of a lightweight prefabricated steel structure with ventilated facades, attached to the existing structure of the buildings and supported from below by added, reinforced concrete supports for new ceiling slabs and walls.
The technical floors have been developed with an additional residential function based on the above light solutions, so as not to burden the building structure. The development on the top floor is changing into the form of city villas, sometimes two-level, generating additional space for commercialization, allowing partial reimbursement of costs related to the transformation of the facilities. Freedom of vertical arrangement and grouping of bay windows was assumed, which allows for increased individualization of solutions on individual buildings, which occur in large numbers over a large area.
In order to reduce the shortage of parking spaces, underground parking lots were designed using prefabricated technology, which also act as shelters. They are being implemented in two stages, where the first stage is a regular shelter consisting of prefabricated sections installed at the level of the future underground parking lot and then, in the second stage, transformed into bicycle rooms in the target parking area. It was assumed that a new function would be implemented in combination with vertical communication of existing buildings. The following functions were planned above the garages: recreational and playgrounds using elements from prefabricated, ready-made objects as playground equipment.
Commercial functions were solved in a similar way, namely as semi-finished elements assembled in the target location according to needs and in stages in any configuration and spatial arrangement as convenient centers or individual premises added to residential buildings.
